General information

53 villages surround Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve (TATR) within 5 kilometers of the boundaries of the Tigerreserve. The local population uses the protected area to collect fire wood, graze their cattle, cutting bamboo and teak to sell and to poach animals. These human activities are a huge strain on nature and wildlife. The cattle eats the same grass, leaves and fruits as several deer species and even the Sloth Bear, less food is available for the wildlife because a part of it is being eaten by the cattle. Bamboo and teak give shelter and shade for all wildlife. Tigers, Leopards, but also deer and wild boar use the bamboo to hide from each other and lie in the shade to cool down.

The existence of the local people revolves around growing crops such as rice, grain, corn, cotton and in some villages fishing. Most people have food to eat but no money. They cut bamboo to make mats, which can be used as a partition between houses, to sell on the market. When someone wants to build a house for which they need teak, they will ask around in the villages until they found someone who is willing to cut it for them. Bamboo cutting and the making of the mats is mostly done by women, because the men work the fields.
